Filming concertos and orchestral concerts

When you perform with an orchestra as soloist or conductor, the film should show what you’re doing musically – not just that an orchestra is playing.

For orchestral productions I work with five or six cameras and a second camera operator. The shot has to be in the right place at the right moment: on the soloist, on the woodwind solo, on the conductor’s cue. That’s why I start with the score, not the seating plan.

The sound

A main microphone array captures the orchestra as a whole, with a few spot mics for balance – above all for the soloist. The orchestra isn’t dissected into individual parts. Recording a rehearsal helps with balance, lighting and camera work, and gives me material for corrections.
